The European Commission announced on Tuesday 21 December that it had adopted two funding decisions - totalling €560 million - to support refugee education and help manage human migration in Turkey.
The overall envelope is divided into two parts. The first, with €530 million to promote the integration of children in the education system and to give refugees in Turkey access to higher education.
The second component, worth €30 million should help the country manage the migration issue and fund border protection, through increased operational capacity, as well as to improve the management of migration at Turkish airports and the standards and conditions for migrants in accommodation centres.
Turkey currently hosts nearly four million refugees, including 3.6 million Syrians. The Heads of State and Government had prioritised support for refugees in Turkey for the period 2021-2023 at the European Council on 24-25 June 2021.
