Brussels, 29/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - In the light of the worsening of the humanitarian crisis and insecurity in Darfur (Sudan), the European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel have announced that they would soon travel to Khartoum to meet President Bashir (see EUROPE 9275 and 9267). According to a European source, this meeting could take place on the sidelines of the European Commission-African Union Commission working meeting in Addis Abeba on 2 October (see EUROPE 9275). “That is one possibility. The idea is to pass on the message at the highest level that the resumption of political dialogue is the only option for resolving the crisis and that the deployment of a United Nations peace-keeping force, in line with the Security Council resolution, is one of the key elements,” said the same source (see EUROPE 9275 on the debate on Darfur in the European Parliament).
