Brussels, 29/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 29 September, the Union of European Federalists (UEF) and the Young European Federalists (JEF) reacted critically to the European Commission's White Paper on communication policy (see EUROPE 9267 and, on the equally critical remarks by MEP Doris Pack and ECAS, EUROPE 9272). Better communication alone will not solve the problem of public opinion on Europe, warn the Federalists in a press release, arguing for “decisive steps towards a real pan-European democratic process”. They suggest a number of concrete measures: - opening up the legislative sessions of the Council of Ministers; - looking for more “Erasmus-type” policies, which are positive for people in their daily lives (protection of the rights of air passengers is one such policy); - building a stronger link with local government and local associations; - enlisting national governments in the communication process, because they themselves need a “strong and popular” EU.
