Strasbourg, 29/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 28 September, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on progress in the European satellite navigation programme Galileo. The EP is calling on the European Commission to made changes to legal and procedural regulations to ensure Galileo continues to make progress, and approved the new calendar for implementing Galileo published by the Commission (see EUROPE No. 9205), urging the Commission to stick to it and ensure it is respected. The MEPs want to be kept informed of any additional costs of delay and any important modifications in the future in the appropriate time, not years after the event. The EP welcomed progress in the negotiations with the companies running the project and called on all space industry stakeholders to ensure they manage to reach agreement in a constructive manner. The EP also urged the Galileo Surveillance Authority to submit six-monthly progress reports to the EP and to give an expert appointed by the EP the status of a standing observer. The resolution calls on the Commission to ensure that the Parliament is informed before the signing of any new institutional participation contract with a country outside the EU.
