THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cfsp/lebanon

29/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Lebanese crisis and Resolution 1701 of the Security Council seem to have opened up the possibility of returning to greater international solidarity, which may help to "pick up the thread, once more, for consensual international policy in the fight against terrorism and in crisis zones", further to the split caused by the unilateral Anglo-American decision to undertake military intervention in Iraq in 2003, states Pietro Calamia in an article entitled A Turning Point in International Policy?, published in edition 954 of the Lettera diplomatica (our translation of title and quotations). The former Italian permanent representative to the EU believes that the EU has been able to seize this opportunity, and shows the "role which Italy and the Prodi government were able to play in bringing the European Union to an active international role". In this way, the European Union has "returned to the international stage", Ambassador Calamia point out, concluding: "common foreign policy can be born of concrete action, pending the reinforcement of the institutions".
