EU imposes embargo on imports of chicks and eggs from the US until 23 March - Mr Byrne in Washington on 18 and 19 March

Brussels, 24/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - With a new bird 'flu infestation having been confirmed in Texas on Monday evening, the European Commission decided on Tuesday to apply immediate measures to protect the EU against the risk of the American virus spreading on its territory. All imports of live poultry, eggs and poultry meat from the United States will be suspended until 23 March (even though the EU does not import poultry meat from the US for sanitary reasons).
