Brussels, 18/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission raised no objections to the purchase, by the German company Tchibo AG, of the 20.10% stake in Beiersdorf held by the German insurance company, Allianz. This transaction enables Tchibo to increase its shareholding in Beiersdorf to 50.46% and therefore gives it overall control. Tchibo is a family-owned business, mainly active in the coffee sector. The company produces and distributes coffee in its retail outlets and coffee shops. It also sells consumer goods and services, although this activity is less important than the coffee business. Beiersdorf is also active in the manufacture and sale of a wide variety of consumer products, particularly cosmetics, medical and personal health care products and adhesives. The Commission's investigation showed that there were no significant overlaps between Tchibo's and Beiersdorf's activities. Moreover, there was no danger of Tchibo appropriating Beiersdorf's products in order to sell them in its outlets, as a way of ousting the competition.
