Brussels, 18/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - After the further cancellation of a meeting this week in Geneva, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Eurochambres, appealed to the member countries of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to take up negotiations early next year. "Since the failure of the Cancun Ministerial there have been signs of willingness but no significant progress on revitalising multilateral trade negotiations", Christoph Leitl, Eurochambres President recalls. He fears that "after missing yet another deadline, we now risk losing one more year in a deadlocked process". According to Mr Leitl, "the European Commission has already shown flexibility on the Singapore issues, which is a good basis for future talks. We also urge other WTO members to make concessions on their positions to gain the momentum needed to start real negotiations early in 2004".
