18/12/2003 (Agence Europe) - Several Christian organisations active in the field of immigration and asylum, including COMECE, the Commission of the Bishops' Conference of the European Community, welcomed the decision by Pat Cox to take the EU's proposal of directive on family reunification before the Court of Justice of the EU (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.12). The text - which would allow EU countries to make immigrant children over the age of twelve sit integration tests before being allowed to join their parents - violates the fundamental right of third country nationals to live with their families and above all the right of children to live with their parents, the organisations say. They reproach the Member States for not having defended international and European norms in this affair with respect to the human rights upheld by the EU.
