11/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - BEUC, the European consumers organisation, regrets that in the WTO Doha Development negotiations the "EU representatives in Cancun are fighting with one hand tied behind their backs". "There are many positive elements in the EU position in the current negotiations but they are fatally undermined by an insistence on defending the indefensible - in the shape of a Common Agricultural Policy in urgent need of further and deeper reform” explains Jim Murray, BEUC Director, adding: "The CAP is a ball and chain holding back progress in Cancun”. BEUC notes that "The minimum the EU should offer in Cancun is a clear commitment to phase out as quickly as possible all forms (direct and indirect) of dumping of food on the world market below the cost of production."
