26/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - Luigi Vinci, Italian member of the European Parliament United Left group, has expressed himself angrily in a letter to his colleagues on the decision to postpone sending an official delegation to Ankara for the re-opening on 28 March of the trial of Leyla Zana, winner of the Parliament's Sakharov Prize in 1995, (who has been imprisoned for nine years, along with three other Turkish MPs of Kurdish origin, after a trial that was ruled "unfair" by the European Court of Human Rights). The Conference of the Presidents on 13 March had unanimously agreed to send the delegation, stresses Mr Vinci, whereas a simple e-mail from the Director General of President Cox stated that the postponement had been decided on further to consultations with political groups. Certain groups are against postponing the visit, insists Mr Vinci, who is requesting clarifications on how this "illegal" decision was reached (as it changes a decision by the Conference of the Presidents). My group has taken a decision to send a delegation to the re-opening of the trial, Mr Vinci announces.
