26/03/2003 (Agence Europe) - A Greek Presidency source cited by AFP indicates that the informal Ecofin Council to be held in Crete from 4 to 6 April will probably discuss the possibility of extending (Ed.: by some months) the mandate held by Wim Duisenberg as President of the European Central Bank over and beyond 9 July, the day when Mr Duisenberg had planned to leave upon reaching the age of 68. This would make it possible to shed light on the fate of the candidate for Mr Duisenberg's succession, Governor of the Bank of France Jean-Claude Trichet. The verdict concerning Mr Trichet in the Crédit Lyonnais court proceedings is foreseen for 18 June. The final decision will be taken by the European Council of Thessaloniki on 20 and 21 June.
