German reaction to opening of investigation into aid in favour of BMW

Brussels, 04/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Reacting to the Commission's decision to open a formal investigation procedure against the aid that the German authorities are proposing to grant to BMW AG for the construction of a new car plant in Leipzig (see yesterday's EUROPE, page 12), a spokesman for the Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, said on Wednesday in Frankfurt that the government would keep to its objective of granting subsidies of EUR 416.6 million to the Bavarian car manufacturer.
