Assembly suspends voting rights of Russian deputies and calls on Committee of Ministers report back in June on possible suspension

Strasbourg, 07/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Council of Europe Assembly called on the Committee of Ministers to suspend Russia's membership if it did not call a cease-fire in Chechnya and engage in political dialogue with "a cross-section of the Chechen population", states a press release. Russia "has violated and continues to violate human rights in the Chechen Republic", and the Assembly thus calls on member states to refer to the European Court of Human Rights alleged breaches by Russia...
