Brussels, 07/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for Competition, Mario Monti should make announce a decision on Tuesday 11 April on the opening of the second phase of investigation of the merger between the British and German telecommunications giants Vodafone and Mannesmann. The operation was re-notified at the start of March on request for the European Commission who wanted to get additional information. World's largest in mobile telephony, Vodafone was already engaged in acquiring the number two on the British mobile telephony market, Orange, acquired in 1999 by Mannesmann. "Orange is not the only source of preoccupation," indicate people in the Commission while specifying that the undertakings presented with the second notification "are very similar to the first undertakings." The discussions continue, however "the market is already tested" therefore there remains little margin, added the same sources. Vodafone repeats that it is "confident that an in-depth investigation by the Commission will not be necessary." However, "nothing is over" noted Community sources.
