Isolate the extreme right but weave more links with Austrian society

Vienna, 07/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - Following three days of studies on the "Cooperation in the action against the Extreme right in Europe," organised in Vienna by the European Parliament's European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE-NGL) group, the French President Francis Wurtz recalled that the line taken by his group was always to act to "isolate Haider without isolating the Austrian people." These study days enabled them to strengthen the group's conviction according to which the isolation of the extreme right requires efforts in view of "weaving more links than ever with Austrian society, in the spirit of democratic solidarity." While inviting the fourteen governments of the Member States to maintain their political pressure on the Austrian authorities to reduce the risk of creating acceptance for the participation of the extreme right in government, Mr. Wurtz deplored "certain narrow and counter-productive initiatives targeting Austrian citizens and cultural institutions, whose activities do not constitute support for the present ruling coalition in Vienna."

The seminars in Vienna, on which we will return later, will experience an extension as of next week in Strasbourg: Wednesday, immediately after the speech in plenary by President Klestil, the GUE/NGL group will receive a representative delegation from the Austrian resistance movement to the extreme right. All the groups from the left are invited to join this demonstration.
