On Tuesday 23 June, the European Commission proposed extending until 30 June 2038 the decision governing the EU position during the annual consultations with the United Kingdom on fishing quotas for shared fish stocks.
Adopted in 2021 under the Trade and Cooperation Agreement concluded after Brexit, this decision sets out the principles guiding the negotiations conducted each year by the Commission with that country on total allowable catches (TACs). It provides that the Union should rely on the best available scientific advice, the precautionary principle and the sustainability objectives of the common fisheries policy.
A review carried out in 2023 concluded that this arrangement was functioning satisfactorily.
As the current decision expires on 30 June 2027, the Commission is proposing to extend it for a further 11 years, while providing for a new review by the end of 2036 at the latest.
This extension (https://aeur.eu/f/mkq ) is intended to guarantee the stability of the legal framework governing the annual negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom on the management of shared fish stocks in the North Sea and western waters.
