25/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Monday, 22 June, the European Union and Turkmenistan held their 18th annual human rights dialogue in Ashgabat. The EU welcomed its partner’s diplomatic openness in a broader context of intensified relations with Central Asia. The discussions focused on the rule of law, social reforms, and cooperation with the International Labour Organization so as to combat forced labour. Nevertheless, the EU expressed that it was deeply concerned about the repression of [human] rights defenders, the use of torture, enforced disappearances, and restrictions on internet access in the country. It also urged Turkmenistan to decriminalise homosexual relations, to criminalise domestic violence, and to ensure its citizens abroad have access to non-discriminatory consular services. Both sides have agreed to continue with their cooperation between now and their next dialogue, which is scheduled to take place in Brussels. More details: https://aeur.eu/f/mjz (JM)
