25/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Union will deploy an election observation mission for the presidential, legislative, local and regional elections in São Tomé and Príncipe, the European External Action Service (EEAS) announced on Thursday 25 June. Invited by the Santomean authorities, the mission will observe the presidential election on Sunday 19 July, as well as the legislative, local and regional elections scheduled for Sunday 27 September. Portuguese MEP Sérgio Humberto (EPP, Portuguese) has been appointed chief observer for this mission, the second deployed by the EU in the country since 2022. The observers will assess the electoral process and publish their preliminary conclusions after each election, before issuing a final report with recommendations. (BD)
