01/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – European Commission is expected to adopt, on Wednesday 3 June, a communication on the European ocean observation initiative OceanEye (see EUROPE 13855/11). OceanEye will focus on protecting and restoring marine environments, improving climate forecasts and supporting blue economy activities, such as fisheries, aquaculture, offshore energy and maritime transport. Building on the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO) and on the Copernicus marine programme, OceanEye will aim to lay the foundations for a sovereign, cutting-edge European infrastructure in ocean observation technologies, intended to support international efforts in observing and protecting oceans. This initiative, led by the departments of European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis, was announced last March by President Ursula von der Leyen (see EUROPE 13819/11). (LC)
