01/06/26 (Agence Europe) – The European branch of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe), together with several organisations defending the rights of LGBTI people in the Western Balkans, Türkiye, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, published on Monday 1 June its annual review of European Union enlargement. The report assesses the state of LGBTI rights in 10 candidate countries or countries aspiring to join the EU and identifies the priorities to be pursued. According to the organisations, the enlargement process can help encourage the adoption of legislation in line with European principles on fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law. Moreover, they are sounding the alarm over the increase in restrictive legislative measures in several countries. In addition, the organisations are calling on the European Commission to be more explicit in its future enlargement reports regarding its expectations concerning the rights of LGBTI people.
