01/06/26 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 1 June, the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) sent an open letter to European Commissioner for Equality Hadja Lahbib, in response to the enhanced European strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities for the 2026-2030 period, presented by the European Commission on 6 May. Among the recommendations made to turn the strategy’s flagship initiatives into reality, the organisation calls for the effective creation of centres for independent living in willing Member States, the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and better consideration of intersectionality in European policies. ENIL also asks that the simplification measures envisaged by the European Union should not undermine accessibility requirements and reasonable accommodation obligations in housing policies.
