EU strongly condemns Russian drone attack on building in Romania

The High Representative of the Union, Kaja Kallas, strongly condemned, on the evening of Friday 29 May, the serious incident earlier that day in which a Russian drone carrying explosives, involved in a night-time attack against Ukraine, crashed into a residential building in Galați, Romania. Two people were injured.

This reckless act is a direct result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia bears full responsibility for the consequences of its escalatory behaviour and its continued military actions, which threaten the security of EU citizens, regional stability and international peace”, Kaja Kallas denounced in a statement on behalf of the EU.

She reaffirmed the EU’s “unwavering” commitment to the security of Romania and all Member States, saying it stood ready to step up efforts to strengthen protection against such threats. “The EU will continue to advance its initiatives aimed at strengthening defence of all EU land, air and maritime borders capabilities - including on the Eastern Flank, reinforcing defence readiness and consolidating resilience”, the High Representative promised.

Kaja Kallas warned that Russia’s serious and repeated violations of European airspace only reinforced the EU’s determination to support Ukraine and that Europeans would ramp up sanctions against Moscow and disrupt its war machine (see EUROPE 13878/22).
