European Parliament ready for battle to demand suspension of Shein after sex doll scandal

Alongside the motion for a resolution tabled on Friday 21 November by a coalition of MEPs from the Socialists & Democrats, the EPP, Renew Europe and the Greens/EFA (see EUROPE 13757/12) on the sale of illegal products on online trading platforms, three other resolutions on the same subject were published on Monday by MEPs from the ECR, PfE and The Left.

The three ‘concurrent’ resolutions also call for the suspension of the Shein platform and other offending platforms, and want the Commission to use all the powers of the Digital Services Act (DSA) to apply sanctions.

The PfE group is calling for a digital majority age (see EUROPE 13730/7) to be extended to online sales platforms, while the ECR group wants the Commission to include “specific clauses in EU-China trade and customs cooperation frameworks to address the detection, traceability and banning of any criminal product linked to child exploitation”.

The resolution from The Left, put forward by French MEP Leïla Chaïbi, calls for the heads of the platforms to be summoned to appear before the European Parliament and criticises the delays in the investigations carried out under the DSA.

A large number of French MEPs are among the signatories of these resolutions (see EUROPE 13747/2).

On Tuesday 25 November, an informal group was officially launched to act as a ‘bridge’ between elected members of the European Parliament and the French National Assembly.
