A motion for a resolution linked to the recent scandal involving the sale of child pornography dolls on the Shein platform (see EUROPE 13747/2) was tabled in the European Parliament on Friday 21 November by a number of S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA and EPP MEPs, with the aim of calling for additional sanctions to be imposed on the platform (see EUROPE 13746/16).
The text wants to take this case to the European level and states that this case “is not isolated, but reflects a systemic trend of inadequate surveillance and insufficient preventive mechanisms”.
The resolution calls for concrete action from the Commission, urging it to “move from dialogue to decisive implementation” of the mechanisms of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and to “speed up” the investigations already in progress (see EUROPE 13574/10).
The text proposes to consider the temporary suspension of the platform, in the light of the provisions of the DSA, and “not to consider this option as an exceptional measure of last resort”.
The resolution calls for urgent measures to deal with the more general influx of small parcels: the introduction of a “harmonised EU handling fee”, the development of a “clear definition” of ‘fast fashion’, the revision of the Consumer Protection Regulation “without delay” to give the Commission direct investigative powers, and finally, the publication of a Digital Fairness Act to tackle misleading practices and other “regulatory grey areas”.
