LGBTI people are over-represented among the homeless in Europe. While they represent 5 to 10% of the young population, they account for 20 to 40% of homeless young people, according to data from the report published by the European branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, ILGA-Europe, on Friday 21 November.
The analysis, based on research carried out between 2023 and 2024, shows that almost one in five LGBTI people in Europe have experienced homelessness in their lifetime, compared with 4% of the general population. And certain categories are even more exposed.
These figures rise to 34.2% for intersex people and 31% for trans women. Above all, the report identifies family rejection as the main cause of LGBTI homelessness, affecting 71% of the young people concerned.
It also denounces the combined effects of discrimination, economic insecurity and minority stress on access to stable housing. ILGA-Europe calls on governments to take systematic account of the specific needs of LGBTI people in their national strategies, to improve data collection and to fund inclusive services.
