HOTREC, which represents the travel and tourism sector in the EU, together with the European Tourism Industry Coalition, submitted recommendations to EU co-legislators on Wednesday 29 October for the ongoing negotiations on the revision of the Package Travel Directive (PTD), according to a press release (see EUROPE 13733/10).
The coalition proposes seven priorities to keep the sector resilient and competitive: - the deletion of the 24-hour definition of a package; - the removal of rigid prepayment limitations; - avoidance of complaint-handling mechanisms that duplicate existing EU consumer law; - the rejection of additional penalty regimes; - opposition to redundant alternative dispute resolution and online dispute resolution obligations; - clarification of the force majeure criteria applicable to travellers; - support for risk-based insolvency protection.
HOTREC explains, among other things, that it “fully supports the Council’s position to delete the new definition of a package composed within 24 hours. These provisions are impossible to comply with (...). At the time of booking, it is impossible to foresee the additional services that a passenger might add at a later date”.
