European managers support a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040

On Tuesday 28 October, the Confederation of European Managers (CEC European Managers) urged support for a “strong and ambitious” target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 (compared to 1990 levels).

Citing data from The Economist, the confederation states in a commitment letter that inaction could result in losing 50.6% of GDP by 2050 if climate change continues unchecked.

Acting now is good leadership: it protects the economy, society, and Europe’s global standing”, writes the confederation, which represents more than one million managers and business leaders across Europe.

It also believes that Europe must act decisively to preserve its competitive edge, “or risk letting others define the global green agenda”.

The letter goes on to urge the EU to give leaders and managers a stronger voice in shaping climate and sustainable development policies, and to ensure regulatory predictability.

At present, the EU has still not agreed on its 2040 target. The European environment ministers will attempt to reach a political agreement (‘general approach’) on 4 November (see EUROPE 13739/4).
