Georgian government under fire from European critics for lack of transparency in local elections

Several tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Georgia on Saturday 4 October while local elections were being held. The pro-European opposition had called for protests against a government accused of authoritarian drift and rapprochement with Moscow(see EUROPE B13680A11). 

The ruling Georgian Dream party won more than 80% of the vote after nearly 75% of polling stations had been counted, according to the electoral commission.
