06/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 6 October, the European Commission opened a public consultation on the legislation and impact assessment to come in 2026 on CO2 storage markets and infrastructure in the EU, seeking the views of stakeholders until 9 January 2026. The consultation is based on the communication on the 2040 climate target and its impact assessment, which recognise the role of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) in reducing CO2 emissions. In addition, the industrial carbon management strategy (see EUROPE 13344/2) recognises the need for a legislative initiative to develop competitive markets and infrastructures for transporting CO2. According to the Commission, “the EU has the opportunity to create an economic advantage in industrial carbon management technologies, opening up global market opportunities”.
