Manchester attack - Ursula von der Leyen calls to “keep fighting antisemitism in all its forms

Following a knife attack outside a synagogue in Manchester (UK) on Thursday 2 October, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on the social network X to “keep fighting antisemitism in all its forms”. “Hatred, antisemitism and violence have no place in our society”, declared the High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, on the same network. The “terror attack” killed three people - including the assailant - and injured three others, according to Greater Manchester Police. According to figures from a 2023 survey, published in July 2024 by the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, a majority of Jews do not feel safe there and incidents have increased since the Hamas attacks on Israel, with organisations reporting a 400% rise (see EUROPE 13451/26).
