25/08/2025 (Agence Europe) – On 5 August, the European Commission announced that it had approved the inclusion of the Italian liqueur ‘Ratafia Ciociara/Rattafia Ciociara’ in the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). Produced in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), it combines red wine and Morello cherries, sometimes spiced up. Its know-how, handed down since the 17th century, illustrates the local rural tradition. On 12 August, the Commission also approved the registration of the Slovak PGI ‘Muránske buchty’. These sweet filled rolls are made entirely by hand with a dense, soft dough obtained by successive layers of margarine. They can be filled with plums, fromage frais, poppy seeds, walnuts, strawberries, blueberries, morello cherries, apple-cinnamon or chocolate-hazelnut. After cooking, they are traditionally sprinkled with icing sugar. (LC)
