On 22 August, the European Union announced €116 million in funding for thirteen new projects to restore the health of our oceans, seas and inland waters.
These projects have been selected as part of the ‘EU Mission Ocean and Waters’ and cover a range of areas: protecting marine areas, safeguarding migratory fish habitats, reducing the environmental impact of fishing and mobilising communities. The beneficiaries are varied: SMEs, research organisations, local authorities, schools, and businesses. The actions will concern several basins including the Black Sea, Danube River, Baltic and North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Arctic regions.
Among the emblematic projects is SEAMPHONI (€11.1 million), which will use advanced technology to monitor offshore marine biodiversity. DanubeLifelines (€7.8 million) will focus on restoring the Danube’s pathways for fish. Other projects, such as ECO-CATCH (€8.5 million) and MarineGuardian (€8 million), will develop new fishing technologies to reduce unwanted bycatch and protect marine habitats.
These funds are part of the Horizon Europe programme.
