To counter the “negative trend” in levels of physical activity, which is correlated with an increase in overweight levels and a decline in mental well-being, particularly among children and teenagers, the sports ministers of the EU Member States adopted conclusions at their EU Council meeting on Tuesday 13 May. The aim is to promote an integrated approach to sport and physical activity in the education context.
The text supports a school environment that is conducive to physical exercise, integrating sport into all stages of education, from primary to higher education, and strengthening cooperation between the sport, health, education and youth sectors.
The aim is to guarantee at least one hour of physical activity per day for every child, by means of suitable infrastructures, diversified activities and high-quality supervision.
The EU Council also highlights the role of sport in social inclusion, mental health, educational achievements and sustainable development.
