The European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) approved the simplified procedure for the legislative package on value added tax (VAT) in the digital age (ViDA) on Thursday 16 January.
In November 2024, the Finance Ministers of the EU Member States reached a unanimous political agreement on the ‘ViDA’ package, after two years of discussions (see EUROPE 13518/13). Given that the European Parliament had delivered its opinion a year earlier (see EUROPE 13298/11), the EU Council decided to consult the European Parliament again, due to the substantial changes made by the EU Council to the directive.
In his draft report, MEP Ľudovít Ódor (Renew Europe, Slovak) recommended a simplified procedure without amendments. His colleagues approved his proposal. The report will be put to a vote at the next European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg in February.
