Carmakers call on European leaders to lighten burden of compliance in reducing CO2 emissions

16/01/2025 (Agence Europe)The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) sent a letter to EU leaders on Thursday 16 January setting out the industry’s priorities. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz and the new President of ACEA, has three priorities: - finding a way to reduce CO2 emissions without applying the penalties provided for in the 2019 regulation (see EUROPE 13554/6); - creating a regulatory framework to strengthen the competitiveness of European industries; - promoting new approaches to creating global and mutually beneficial trading relationships so that the EU can continue to benefit from the free movement of goods. “The European Green Deal must be subject to a reality check and a realignment – to make it less rigid, more flexible and to turn the decarbonisation of the automotive industry into a green and profitable business model”, he said.
