16/01/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 16 January, the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, the Chairmen of the Delegation to Euronest, Sergey Lagodinsky, and for Relations with the South Caucasus, Nils Ušakovs, the European Parliament’s Permanent Rapporteur for Georgia, Rasa Juknevičienė, and the Chairman of the Election Observation Mission, Antonio López-Istúriz White, expressed their deep concern at the continuing deterioration of the political situation in Georgia, which “must not stay without a response” following the violent attack on former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who had to be hospitalised. “This is yet another example of the escalating violence orchestrated by the Georgian Dream and its allies against peaceful protesters and dissidents”, they said in a statement. On Tuesday 21 January, this new deterioration in the political situation in Georgia will be debated in the plenary session of the European Parliament. (CG)
