Commission assesses degree of compliance of Apple’s iPadOS with DMA

On Monday 4 November, the European Commission announced that it had begun assessing the report submitted by Apple at the beginning of the month, detailing the measures taken to ensure that the iPadOS complies with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Last April, Apple’s iPadOS was added to the list of core platform services for which Apple is designated as a ‘gatekeeper under the DMA (see EUROPE 13401/4).

In the Commission’s view, the operating system used by Apple on its tablets constrains users and does not give them the opportunity to make an ‘informed’ choice. It believes that Apple is using its ecosystem to dissuade users from switching to other operating systems for its tablets”.

Under the DMA, Apple must allow users to define the default web browser of their choice on the iPadOS and authorise other application shops on its operating system.

In mid-September, the Commission also opened two specification procedures “to help Apple to comply with its interoperability obligations under the Digital Markets Act (‘DMA’)(see EUROPE 13486/25). (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
