COP29, global energy storage target of 1,500 GW by 2030 well within reach, according to Ember

In the run-up to COP29 in Baku (Azerbaijan), in an analysis published on 30 October, the think-tank Ember highlights the opportunities for developing networks and storage that arise from the commitments made by the COP Presidency.

This latter has proposed an energy storage target of 1,500 GW by 2030 and an extension of the grid infrastructure by 25 million kilometres by 2030 and a further 65 million kilometres by 2040.

It also proposes to “unlock the potential” of a global clean hydrogen market to support the growth and integration of solar and wind energy.

In its analysis, Ember notes that the storage objective is achievable and probably “too modest”, but that the grid objective will require a considerable effort and that the expansion of hydrogen electrolysers is highly uncertain.

More generally, the think tank recognises the challenge of defining an objective around flexibility of demand or flexibility of supply.

Global consensus on the crucial role of these tools would help to build a common understanding of the clean flexibility toolkit”, concludes the analysis.
