On Friday 26 July, the Council of the European Union appointed four new EU Special Representatives (EUSRs) for the Great Lakes Region, the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Kosovo, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They will all take up their duties on 1 September.
Sweden’s Johan Borgstam has been appointed as EUSR for the Great Lakes Region (see EUROPE 13460/15). His mandate will initially be 12 months.
The Diplomatic Adviser to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, Magdalena Grono (Czech), will become EUSR for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia for an initial period of 12 months (see EUROPE 13456/13).
The new EUSR in Kosovo will be Aivo Orav. The Estonian diplomat will take up his duties for an initial period of two years.
The same will apply to Italy’s Luigi Soreca, appointed EUSR for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
The Council has also extended the mandates of three Special Representatives. The mandate of Miroslav Lajčák, EUSR for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue and other Western Balkans regional issues, has been extended until 31 January 2025. Emanuela Claudia Del Re’s mandate as EUSR for the Sahel has been extended until 30 November 2024, and Annette Weber will remain EUSR for the Horn of Africa until 31 August 2026.
