In a report published on Wednesday 24 July, the think-tank specialising in energy issues, Ember, said that the availability and transparency of data on power grids is “a must” to manage the energy transition efficiently.
“Grid users require a detailed and accurate picture of the grid and its planned evolution, to identify the best opportunities to connect and build solid business cases while enabling the maximisation of the existing network”, stress the report’s authors.
They therefore encourage the publication by grid operators of grid hosting capacity maps, to provide information on the space available on the electricity network for new capacity at a given location, based on the current and future state of the grid.
According to Ember, “ideal” capacity maps should, among other things, be harmonised, be based on transparent assumptions about the planned development of the grid, be accompanied by an open database and integrate the different levels of grid governance.
