European Commission approves Spanish aid worth €1.2 billion for production of renewable hydrogen

On Friday 26 July, the European Commission authorised €1.2 billion in Spanish aid to support investment in the production of renewable hydrogen as part of the transition to a net zero emissions economy.

The scheme was authorised under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework adopted by the Commission on 9 March 2023 and amended on 20 November 2023 and 2 May 2024.

The aid will be financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), for investments in renewable hydrogen production with an installed capacity of at least 100 MW. The investments supported may include the production of fuels derived from renewable hydrogen, the storage of renewable hydrogen and the production of renewable electricity. Applicants must have concluded agreements with buyers to cover at least 60% of the renewable hydrogen or fuel derived from renewable hydrogen that they plan to produce.

The aid will take the form of direct grants covering the investment costs of the projects supported. The amount of aid for each beneficiary will be determined through a competitive bidding procedure. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
