18/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 17 July, the ambassadors of the EU Member States, meeting within the Political and Security Committee, gave their approval to the appointment of Magdalena Grono to the post of Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Georgia, the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU announced on the same day. She will replace Toivo Klaar, in post since November 2017. The Special Representative’s mission is to contribute to the peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region - the crisis in Georgia and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict - and to encourage regional cooperation. He co-chaired and participated on behalf of the EU in the international discussions in Geneva on the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia. Ms Grono's appointment still has to be formally confirmed by the Council of the EU. She is currently Chief Diplomatic Adviser to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. (CG)
