At the start of the G20 Development ministerial meeting being held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from Monday 22 to Friday 26 July, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, stressed the importance of combating inequality.
“Today, both Brazil and the EU are committed to tackling inequalities and advancing a future that is fairer, greener, and more sustainable for all”, Ms Urpilainen wrote on X on Monday, pointing out that the EU’s Global Gateway initiative (see EUROPE 13444/15) focused on the 40% most vulnerable people and that 61% of EU projects in Latin America and the Caribbean were already tackling inequality, according to the European Commission’s ‘Inequality Marker’.
The first results from this marker were presented at the beginning of July (see EUROPE 13445/1).
On Tuesday morning, the Commissioner is due to announce a new EU contribution to the Amazon Fund at the fifth Brazil-EU Forum. A meeting with representatives of civil society and members of the ‘Youth Sounding Board’, which advises the Commission, is also planned. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
