‘European Peace Facility’, new support for Armenia and Mauritania

On Monday 22 July, the Council of the European Union adopted two assistance measures under the ‘European Peace Facility’ (EPF): one worth €10 million for the Armenian armed forces and another worth €15 million for those of Mauritania.

The aim of EU support for Armenia is to strengthen the logistical capabilities of the Armenian armed forces and contribute to better protection of civilians in the event of crises and emergencies. It also aims to strengthen the country’s resilience and accelerate the interoperability of its armed forces in the event of Armenia’s possible future participation in international military missions and operations, including those deployed by the EU, according to the Council communiqué. In practical terms, this means providing a deployable tented camp for a battalion-sized unit.

Support for Mauritania is intended to bolster the country’s surveillance and deterrence capabilities on land and at sea and will help to combat illegal activities at sea that could undermine the country’s security and authority. This will involve the supply of personal protective equipment, medical equipment, multi-purpose aircraft and a patrol boat. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
