In a statement published on Friday 19 July, the NGO network Transport & Environment (T&E) called on the European Commission to reverse its decision to exclude long-haul flights from the scope of the aviation emissions monitoring scheme, following the end of the public consultation on the subject on Monday 29 July.
This monitoring programme, which will begin in January 2025, will only apply to long-haul flights in 2 years’ time, when its scope will be extended to all flights departing from or arriving in Europe.
T&E regrets that the European Commission is “bowing to pressure from legacy airlines”, as this exclusion from the scope of application will have the effect of ignoring 67% of aviation’s impact on the climate (see EUROPE 13452/3). “This ruling will further delay the understanding of non-CO2 emissions and hinder action on addressing aviation’s full climate impact”, said T&E.
Opportunity Green’s legal analysis concludes that this postponement of the introduction of CO2 reporting is contrary to the Emissions Trading System directive.
