EU upgrades status in ‘Register of Damage for Ukraine’

22/07/24 (Agence Europe)On Monday 22 July, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision changing the EU’s status from Associate Member to Participant, as part of the work on the ‘Register of Damage for Ukraine’, which has been active since April (see EUROPE 13383/17). The purpose of the Register is to record evidence and information relating to claims for damage, loss or injury caused by Russian military aggression against Ukraine. The change in status reinforces the EU’s commitment to ensuring that Russia is held to account for violations of international law in the war in Ukraine, and contributes to the financial stability of the Register. Starting in August, twelve new categories of damage will be eligible for compensation claims, particularly in relation to critical Ukrainian infrastructure. For further information: https://aeur.eu/f/d3a (MB)
