In Budapest, EU ministers will discuss competitiveness in law, artificial intelligence and future of judicial cooperation

The European Union’s Justice Ministers will meet in Budapest on Tuesday 23 July for an informal meeting under the Hungarian Presidency. Three topics are on the agenda: competitiveness in EU law, artificial intelligence in justice and the future of the areas of freedom, security and justice.

The day will begin with a discussion on competitiveness in law. The Hungarian Presidency wishes to integrate this concept into all EU policies, including judicial cooperation in civil matters. The ministers will discuss the successes of the last twenty-five years and share their ideas for strengthening future competitiveness in the field of civil law.

The aim is to gather suggestions from the Member States on the future of European civil law, while taking into account competitiveness aspects.

The debate on artificial intelligence (AI) in the justice system will be held during the working lunch. The ministers will examine the benefits and challenges of AI in improving the accessibility and efficiency of the judicial system. They will discuss potential applications such as records management, administrative support and predictive systems. The adoption of legislation on Artificial Intelligence (see EUROPE 13413/37) and the guidelines of the European AI Office will be at the heart of the discussions in order to strike a balance between innovation and respect for fundamental rights.

Finally, the future of the area of freedom, security and justice will be at the heart of the discussions. On the basis of the previous strategic programmes and the guidelines of the latest one, the ministers will define the future priorities for European judicial cooperation for the 2024-2029 institutional cycle.
