Secretary General of Council of Europe reaffirms organisation’s role in ‘Register of Damage for Ukraine’

Present in The Hague on Tuesday 2 April, at the ministerial conference co-organised by the Netherlands, Ukraine and the European Commission and entitled “Restoring Justice for Ukraine”, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, reaffirmed her organisation’s role in the “Register of Damage for Ukraine” created in May 2023, at the 4th Council of Europe Summit held in Reykjavik.

Today, the Register will receive its first claims”, she declared, after recalling the opening of the Office of the Register of Damage in Kyiv, which she attended last month.

This amounts to the first, substantial and necessary step towards a future international compensation mechanism in which the Council of Europe also stands ready to play a role, as we seek, ultimately, to ensure accountability for the crimes that Russia is committing”.

The initial phase that has just been launched focuses on damaged or destroyed homes.

The number of claims in this category could be between 300,000 and 600,000.
