03/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 3 April, the EUNAVFOR MED Irini operation, one of whose aims is to enforce the arms embargo in Libya, announced that it had investigated 13,844 vessels between its launch in March 2020 and 1 April 2024. Since its launch, the operation has visited 603 vessels with the consent of their captains, boarded and inspected 27 suspect vessels and seized cargos on three occasions. No vessels had their cargo seized in 2023 and early 2024. EUNAVFOR MED Irini investigated 1,388 suspect flights. Through the embedded Crime Information Cell, the operation issued 85 recommendations to the relevant law enforcement authorities for the inspection of suspect vessels in the ports of EU Member States, of which 67 were implemented. The operation has also produced 52 special reports for the UN Panel of Experts on Libya. (CG)
